Staff Reporter ~ Log Cabin Democrat
Gathers news and information in multimedia formats for digital and print products. Develops and uncovers local news, providing a digital stream of information from developing news scenes that is reliable and credible – with sufficient follow-up for digital and print needs. Responsibilities could include coverage of breaking news, features, meetings, elections, public hearings, controversies, and investigative work on any and all topics as necessary. Individual reporters may have beat assignments and other responsibilities to include data gathering and photojournalism.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: College Degree
EXPERIENCE OR TRAINING: 2 Years Newspaper Experience (Preferred)
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Produces local news content for our Web sites in multiple takes and in multiple formats. This could include shooting photos and video with most stories.
Is adept covering the news with digital tools and industry standard software remotely. This includes being familiar with transmitting content using, cellular connections, email and emerging protocols.
Engages in social media strategies and new media responsibilities as assigned.
Produces or assists with daily breaking coverage as well as in-depth weekend work or special projects and sections as determined by the editors leading coverage or departments on any given day. To that end, is responsible for planning and filing a news budget for days ahead, including providing an outlook for weekends and special coverage months ahead.
Focuses on content that emphasizes what readers want to know, why they care, and the effect of this issue on their lives.
Volume of story production expected may vary to include a few stories per day to less in order to produce longer form journalism.
Writes tight news stories with essential information in a timely manner for online as well as a fuller version for print, as need. Includes an emphasis on ensuring , news and impact are written high in the first graphs.
Is responsible for keeping abreast of local, state, and national news relating to all beats and monitoring multiple digital and print local sources and media outlets for leads and tips.
Is expected to cultivate sources, and provide behind-the-scenes coverage that goes beyond official actions and pronouncements.
Responsible for standard reporter administrative tasks such as time card maintenance and filing required paperwork in a timely manner. Has responsibility for managing schedule and seeking editor’s assistance resolving conflicts and approval for overtime.
Is responsible for having/maintaining a working smartphone and following the policies and protocols for using it in the field.
Performs other duties as assigned.
